The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace is extremely concerned about the Canadian government’s one-sided response to the appallingly destructive attacks taking place almost entirely within Gaza killing, wounding and traumatizing so many.
Whereas Canada could play a positive and helpful role in bringing about a long-lasting resolution to the conflict, to the benefit of all people involved; instead, our government is choosing to support the government of Israel’s military actions against what amounts to an open-air prison crowded with Palestinian children, women and men. The suggestion that the government of Israel is asking people to leave for their own safety cannot be taken seriously, given that there is nowhere for Palestinian people to go that is safe. Indeed attacks on Gaza’s civilians have been compared to “shooting fish in a barrel”.
The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace has historically always worked for peaceful resolution of conflicts and adherence to international laws and conventions. Collective punishment and civilian attacks are illegal under international law. In particular, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace urges our government to promote the participation of women in all peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction, as is mandated by several United Nations Resolutions.
We recognize the trauma that rocket attacks into Israel are causing, and regret Israeli military and civilian deaths; however, we do not believe that the hundreds of deaths and the destruction of thousands of homes of Palestinians can be justified as an act of self-defence.
As a condition of the ceasefire of 2012, which has largely been maintained until the last few weeks, the government of Israel promised to end the siege on Gaza. This has not happened. It is the lifting of the siege on Gaza that Hamas is holding out for at the current time, as conditions in Gaza under the siege are unlivable. We are appalled at these conditions and at the imprisonment of Palestinian children, wanton seizures, destruction of property and nearly complete lack of mobility of Palestinian civilians.
Unnecessary death, destruction, and suffering will not help Israel to achieve long-term peace and security, nor will it help Palestinians to advance their society. Indeed people on both sides will be left to suffer the physical and psychological damage for generations. There are ways that Canada could be helping to de-escalate this conflict and to create conditions for a just resolution; taking one side in the conflict is not the way to move forward.
We call on the Government of Canada to support an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, to prohibit Canadian arms exports to Israel, to call on Israel to end the siege of Gaza, to increase Canadian development aid to Gaza for reconstruction, and to be an arbiter for mutual human security for all sides.

La Voix des femmes canadiennes pour la paix est extrêmement préoccupé par la réponse unilatérale du gouvernement canadien aux attaques terriblement destructrices qui ont lieu presque entièrement à Gaza, provoquant tant de blessures, de traumatisme et de mort.
Le Canada pourrait jouer un rôle positif et utile pour amener une résolution durable du conflit, au bénéfice de toutes les personnes impliquées; à la place, le gouvernement choisit de soutenir les actes militaires du gouvernement israëlien contre Gaza, lieu qui équivaut à une prison à ciel ouvert, bondée d’enfants, de femmes et d’hommes palestiniens. La suggestion que le gouvernement d’Israël demande aux gens de partir pour leur propre sécurité ne peut pas être prise au sérieux, étant donné qu’il n’y a nulle part où les Palestiniens pourraient aller qui est sûr. En effet, on a fait la comparaison entre ces attaques contre les civils de Gaza et l’idée de « tirer une vache dans un couloir ».
La Voix des femmes canadiennes pour la paix a toujours toujours travaillé pour la résolution pacifique des conflits et le respect des lois et conventions internationales. La punition collective et les attaques contre des civils sont illégales en vertu du droit international. En particulier, la Voix des femmes canadiennes pour la paix exhorte le gouvernement à promouvoir la participation des femmes dans toutes les négociations de paix et dans la reconstruction post-conflit, comme cela est prescrit par plusieurs résolutions des Nations Unies
Nous reconnaissons le traumatisme causé par les tirs de roquettes sur Israël et nous regrettons la mort de civils et de militaires israéliens. Toutefois, nous ne croyons pas que les centaines de morts et la destruction de milliers de maisons de Palestiniens peuvent être justifiées comme un acte de légitime défense..
Comme condition du cessez le feu de 2012, qui a été largement maintenu jusqu’à ces dernières semaines, le gouvernement d’Israël a promis de mettre fin au siège de Gaza. Ce n’est pas arrivé. C’est à cause de ce siège que les conditions dans la bande de Gaza sont invivables et Hamas exige sa terminaison. Nous sommes consternés par ces conditions et par l’emprisonnement des enfants palestiniens, les saisies injustifiés, la destruction de biens et les entraves extrêmes à la mobilité des civils palestiniens.
Toute cette souffrance, ces morts, cette destruction inutile ne saurant aider l’Israël à parvenir à une paix et à la sécurité durables, ni aux Palestiniens à faire progresser leur société. Les dommages physiques et psychologiques auront un impact nocif pour les générations à venir des deux côtés. Il existe des moyens pour désamorcer ce conflit et pour créer les conditions pour une solution juste que le Canada pourrait employer; prendre un côté dans le conflit n’est pas le moyen d’avancer.
Nous demandons au gouvernement du Canada d’appuyer un cessez le feu immédiat entre Israël et le Hamas, d’interdire les exportations d’armes du Canada à Israël, à appeler Israël à mettre fin au siège de Gaza, d’augmenter l’aide canadienne au développement à Gaza pour la reconstruction, et d’être un arbitre pour la sécurité humaine mutuelle pour toutes les parties.
