Canadian Voice of Women for Peace’s United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 66 Parallel Event.

An inspiring discussion on how disarmament can transform our economies forward through diverting funds from carbon intensive weapons to climate change mitigation, regeneration and women’s empowerment. Speakers included Sarah Kamau, Rachel Parent and Oyeyinka Oyelowo. Hosted by Vanessa Lanteigne, National Coordinator of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.

Sarah Kamau who is a Climate Change Professional, a change agent and social entrepreneur who is passionate about championing the rights of the less privileged through advocacy and community development. While living in Kenya, she graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Nairobi and worked in various national and international organizations in refugee camps and in the humanitarian field. Through these experiences, Sarah has witnessed firsthand loss of lives and livelihoods, and forced migration due to climate change. Currently, Sarah contributes her expertise and passion for climate change action as the Climate Change Project Coordinator at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM); as well as the co-founder and coordinator of the Africa Climate Action Initiative (ACAI), a CAP Network initiative to coordinate and build the capacity of African communities and partners to adapt to and mitigate climate change.

Rachel Parent is a youth activist whose passions include food and climate, social justice, animal rights, responsible consumption, and environmental protection. In 2012, Rachel founded Kids Right to Know, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth, about the connection between food production and climate change, with a focus and transparency in the labelling of Genetically Modified Food in Canada and the USA. She has given dozens of television, radio, magazine and online interviews, including a well-publicized debate about GMO labelling with celebrity host Kevin O’Leary on CBC Television. In Addition she has given two TEDx talks presentations. She has been internationally recognized as an environmental speaker and awarded for her work, including the Rob Stewart Youth Eco-Hero Award, Elle Quebec Magazine Woman of the Year, Post City Magazine Toronto most inspiring Women of 2017, Toronto NOW Magazine’s Eco-Heroes, along with a long list of recognitions and awards. Rachel is presently dedicated to the development of a Monarch Butterfly conservation program. She is the Director of Gen-Earth Events, an environmental platform dedicated to education through film and activism, with the goal of motivating youth to learn about organic regenerative climate solutions to help make the world a better place for humans, animals and our planet.

Oyeyinka Oyelowo is a Litigation associate and Founder of Yinka Law, a law firm focused on the practice areas of Employment, Labour and Human Rights law. As a board director with the Canadian Voice of Women fo Peace she has been an advocate for environmental sustainability and international peace initiatives.
