To mark International Day of Peace on September 21, 2026, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will present them with our open letter and invite you to take a local action in solidarity. On Peace Day, we are planning a press conference and rally to present an open letter of #1000WomenForPeace in Ottawa to the Prime Minister and Minister for WAGE and encourage you to join us in the capital or to hold a local action #CareNotWarfare in solidarity.
We are calling on the federal government to cut military spending and cancel the defence industrial strategy. Canadian military spending was drastically increased from $20 billion in 2015 to $65 billion in 2025 and will reach $159 billion in 2035 to meet the NATO 5% GDP target. We want the government to fund a green, peace care economy that improves the lives of all Canadians, protects the climate and environment, and ensures our commitment to international law and cooperation not militarism. High military spending is not productive for the economy and dangerously drives arms races and conflict.
The federal government should reduce and re-allocate military spending to affordable housing, health care, education, climate action, the Calls to Action of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMWIG) Inquiry, public transit, international aid, and increase the budget for WAGE.
