“Humanity remains one misunderstanding, one misstep, one miscalculation, one pushed button away from annihilation,” said the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres on September 26, 2021, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
We have already come close to disaster several times. We can’t always be lucky. Nuclear disarmament is an emergency. Nevertheless, following US instructions to NATO member countries, Canada boycotted the entire drafting process and the conference adopting the TPNW at the UN in 2017. The Treaty entered into force on 22 January 2021. Currently, it has been signed by 86 countries, of which 61 have also ratified it. But Canada still refuses to do so. Yet, according to a Nanos poll, 74% of Canadians are in favour of this treaty.
