WHITE POPPIES FOR PEACE  Activists call on Canada to prepare for peace, not war

NOV 11 – THREE ACTIONS ACROSS CANADA:

Kjipuktuk/Halifax at  3 pm Maritime Time, Toronto 12 noon, Salt Spring Island

and at COP 26 in Glasgow

1). Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace in collaboration with over 50 women from across the country, have created a banner to commemorate the 38 Yemeni children who were killed in August 2018 by a Lockheed Martin Bomb as they travelled on a school bus. We have embroidered the names of the children in Arabic and English on the  feathers of two peace doves flying over an area of  militarized devastation.  The intention of the banner is to commemorate the countless casualties of the arms industry as well as expressing the commitment to peaceful solutions of diplomacy and nonviolence in all conflicts. The banner has brought Muslim and Non-Muslim women together through stitching and zoom calls talking about grief and state violence, called “Knot Bombs- Piecing Peace Together.”

This banner will be smudged and presented publicly for the first time in our White Peace Poppy Ceremony in the Peace and Friendship Park on November 11 at 3pm. Wreaths will be placed to remember the many victims of war and violence – civilian casualties, the earth, refugees, PTSD suffering veterans, children. Please join us from 3 to 3:45 on November 11, 2021.

“White poppies symbolise a commitment to peace and to finding non-violent solutions to conflicts. In this way they reassert the original message of remembrance, ‘never again’.” ~ Peace Pledge Union

‘Let us prepare for a peaceful world through our commitment to justice and to acting on the climate emergency  – not through funding for war’  said Lyn Adamson, Co-Chair of Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.

“Buying fighter jets at a lifetime cost of $88 B is not an investment that will bring us peace.  Investing these funds in climate justice – mitigation and adaptation – will help communities stay safe where they live. Underfunding our response to the climate emergency will result in disastrous consequences later, including conflict, dislocation and a huge refugee crisis’  said Adamson.

VOW has written to Ministers Guilbeault and Ananda calling for demilitarization and a gender responsive climate action plan.  VOW is part of the No Fighter Jets coalition.
