Our Work

Nocturne

Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace is inviting the public to join in our community project “Making a Piece for Peace” on Saturday, October 19, for Nocturne 2019, an annual evening of art and wonder in the heart of K’jipuktuk/Halifax.  If you can, please make a square (approximately 35 cm by 35 cm/ 14 in by 14 in) for our project. The square can be knitted, crocheted, felted, printed, woven – or any textile combination that inspires you!  Add your favourite peace quote and your name or the name of your organization pinned to the piece for peace. Then, everyone is invited to help us assemble these squares at Rousseau Chocolatier, 5151 South Street, Halifax, on the night of Nocturne for “Canon Shrouds”. Crocheted peace poppies will be attached to the shroud. It is time to put the canons to ‘rest’.   For more information, contact Kathrin Winkler at winkler.kathrin2@gmail.comor at 902-237-5709 or join the Facebook group:  Nocturne 2019:  Make a Piece for Peace

Federal Election

It is vital that peace is on the minds of those running for election.  The National Board is working on some suggested topics to bring up with candidates.  Please watch the National newsletter for those and remember to talk to candidates about your peace priorities.

White Poppies

To remember is to end war.  We will be making both felt poppies and crocheted poppies to give away.  More details coming soon.

Peace vigil protesting Cutlass Fury 2019

Members of NSVOW gathered for a peace vigil on Monday, September 9, at 12:30 by the Wave on the Halifax waterfront in Sackville Landing (roughly at the bottom of Sackville Street). 22 Ships from eight NATO nations will visit Halifax from September 6 to 20 for Exercise CUTLASS FURY 2019 to conduct exercises in the waters and skies 50 to 100 nautical miles off the southeast shores of Nova Scotia. The ships did a sail-past as they left Halifax Harbour at 1:00 on Monday, September 9. City council has also given approval for a fly past of 8 RCAF and DND contracted aircraft to accompany them. We will have two banners: Demilitarize/Decarbonize and Warships on a Dying Ocean to draw attention particularly to the environmental costs of war at a time when we are in a climate emergency. No Harbour for War will host a Panel Discussion on Cutlass Fury 2019, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6:30pm-8:45pm, BMO Community Room, Halifax Central Library, 5440 Spring Garden Road.

Climate Action Week

This September 20 -27, 2019 — The youth of Halifax would like you to join them, starting with a Die-in on Sept 20, at 4pm, climate related events throughout the week, and a GENERAL STRIKE – on Friday Sept 27. The time is now – we do not have time to wait; we need a drastic change to the system we live in to avert the worst effects of the climate breakdown. The IPCC report said we have less than 12 years (most say less than that) before we hit the tipping point (no return) of climate chaos.
