Press Release: Mi’kmaq Grandmothers Lead Peace Activists on a 200km #Walk4Peace Ahead of UN Summit of the Future
#Walking Together for Peace Initiative Summary

We are pleased to provide you with the latest updates on the Walking Together for Peace initiative in Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, Kanata/Canada. Your support is invaluable in amplifying our advocacy efforts, and we want to keep you informed of our progress since September 8th and invite you to our hybrid event this Saturday, September 21st (more details below).

To date, our 26 core walkers have traversed approximately 180 kilometers of the 200-kilometer trek, diligently spreading our message of peace and disarmament. One of many significant highlights of our journey includes the disarmament education workshops conducted at high schools and elementary schools along the route. These disarmament workshops aim to inspire the next generation to embrace peaceful conflict resolution, advocate for nonviolence, and be a part of a larger project to institutionalize disarmament education. We are particularly excited to have attended Aubrey Drive High School today–continuing our educational outreach.

Key Objectives
1. Advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons
2. Call on Canada to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
3. Promote nonviolent conflict resolution
4. Advocate for reallocation of defence spending to social priorities
5. Engage in discussions about disarmament and divestment from the weapons industry
6. Address links between climate change, militarization, and settler colonialism

How to Support
1. Join the final steps of the walk on September 21
2. Attend the hybrid event at Dalhousie University (see the details below)
