From 28 April to 9 May, the Third Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) will convene in New York. This is a pivotal moment for campaigners, parliamentarians, and civil society to expose the widening gap between disarmament rhetoric and the dangerous reality of nuclear proliferation.

Reaching Critical Will (WILPF) is serving as the civil society coordinator for the meeting — you can find detailed information and updates here.

The World Is Watching — And So Should You

As nuclear rhetoric becomes more aggressive, and as some states float the idea of nuclear sharing or even a so-called “Eurobomb,” this PrepCom is a key opportunity to hold states accountable — especially those claiming to support disarmament while actively undermining it.

ICAN has prepared a briefing paper (in English & French) that outlines the core demands and priorities ahead of the PrepCom. This is a powerful tool you can use to inform and amplify your advocacy — whether you’re working with ministries, diplomats, or members of parliament.

Key Points from the Briefing:

  • New proliferation and nuclear sharing arrangements violate existing NPT commitments and further raise the already record-high risk of nuclear weapons use.
  • Ongoing reliance on nuclear weapons by some states diminishes the legitimate security rights of non-nuclear-armed countries.
  • True disarmament leadership is happening through the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) — not in rhetoric but in action.

Here’s How You Can Take Action:

1. Contact Your Government’s NPT Delegation

  • Ask what your country is doing to make this PrepCom meaningful.
  • Share ICAN’s briefing paper to highlight expectations for concrete progress.

2. Engage Parliamentarians

  • Encourage MPs to raise questions about your government’s nuclear policies.
  • Push them to challenge double standards around nuclear sharing, arms spending, and resistance to the TPNW.
  • Find more talking points here.

3. Disrupt the Narrative

  • Make it clear: normalizing nuclear weapons is unacceptable.
  • Highlight how nearly half the world’s states are advancing real progress under the TPNW — including at the recent 3rd Meeting of States Parties and through transparent intersessional work.

Let’s Work Together

This is our chance to push back against the nuclear status quo. We urge you to connect with your representatives, amplify the message, and hold governments to account.
