JOIN OUR WEBINAR: Reflections on the ICAN Hiroshima Youth G7 Summit

Come to listen to VOW and WILPF’s peace campaigner, Sarah Rohleder, and her fellow youth activists talk about their incredible trip to Hiroshima, Japan to attend the ICAN G7 Youth Summit on Nuclear Disarmament in April. Listen to what youth are doing to abolish nuclear weapons. They will also discuss what countries like Canada should to eliminate the worst weapons of mass destruction and ensure a safe future for young people. This webinar is jointly organized by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) and the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) Canada in commemoration of the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and to honour the call of the Hibakusha survivors: ban the bomb!

Sarah Rohleder is a third year student at the University of British Columbia majoring in History with a minor in Anthropology. She is a youth advisor and former intern for Senator Marilou McPhedran, a youth coordinator for Reverse the Trend, and is currently a Peace Campaign Intern for the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) and the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom Canada (WILPF). She is also a former intern for IPPNWC who she is working alongside to produce a youth education webinar series on nuclear weapons.

Anastasia Shakhidzhanova is an intern with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a Youth Coordinator for Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet (RTT)’s Francophone Chapter.  She is enrolled in Columbia University’s Dual BA program with Sciences Po Paris.

After finishing a Political Humanities major and International Finance and Trade minor at Sciences Po, she is now studying Environmental Science at Columbia in NY. Before entering nuclear disarmament activism, Anastasia interned at Fossil Free California and Climate Action Santa Monica, working on plastic pollution, regenerative agriculture, and climate change issues. She has a deep love of nature and is passionate about understanding how developing strong political and social communities can be a means of growing sustainability at the local, national, and international levels. Anastasia is from Los Angeles, California.

Farheen Masfiqua Malek is a passionate and optimistic social activist pursuing her 3rd master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies at the Asian Institute of Technology. Previous academic major were MBA in Marketing and Msc. in Disaster Management. She believes having an equal world regardless of class, race, gender, community, etc. is possible only if the willpower of humans is engaged. She has a good understanding of multicultural and complex background environments by playing different roles in different projects including the government, corporates, and agencies (UN and other organizations). Additionally, her sound knowledge of gender mainstreaming, gender in emergencies, multi-sectoral coordination tasks, and disaster crisis management relevant responses adds to her confidence to work for a peaceful world. She is co-founder of ND 101(Thailand) and currently is a member of Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet (RTT)’s Southeast Asia Chapter, and Global Outreach Director of BeHuman (Singapore).

Youth G7 Summit

The ICAN Hiroshima Youth G7 Summit took place over three days with participants listening to speakers from around the world on a variety of topics, such as those looking at the intersection of nuclear weapons, climate change and gender, the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, international law, and nuclear disarmament. They also particpated in a number of workshops focusing on future advocacy with a chance to engage with each other. The participants also toured the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum, with the chance to hear from an A-bomb survivor Ms. Keiko Ogura. They ended the summit with a presentation and adoption of an outcome statement calling on the G7 leaders to join the TPNW.
