Working together and decision-making through consensus building and non-coercion has always been, and always will be, a central theme of VOW. Since our initial assembly of women across Canada under the common goal of stopping catastrophic nuclear warfare, we have worked in collaboration across borders, divisions, and politics for decades — from organizing an International Women’s Conference in 1962, which included women from the Soviet Union and other socialist countries while the world seemed to be heading to nuclear annihilation, to resisting and organizing with women against the America-Vietnam War including humanitarian exchange visits with Vietnamese women and sending thousands of knitted children’s garments.
We worked in collaboration with like-minded organizations on the launch of the Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAIA) and hosted critical meetings such as the roundtable discussion in the Hague on next steps to delegitimizing war.
We also work with organizations to ensure that government obligations are being met by contributing to publications such as Unfinished Business: A Parallel Report on Canada’s Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action
Today, we continue to collaborate with women and organizations from around the world in our shared vision of a peaceful future. VOW is part of the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network and participates in the No Fighter Jets Coalition, the Women Peace and Security Network-Canada, Hiroshima Day Coaltion-Toronto, and other projects and meetings as we have available volunteers.
