No more line 9 !
Environmental Assessment on Line 9 Now!
As more and more people find out about Enbridge’s Line 9 tar sands pipeline, opposition to the reversal project quickly grows. People are alarmed that the 38 year-old pipeline could rupture in Ontario and Quebec, endangering densely populated areas, sensitive ecosystems, and the drinking water of millions. There is anger that First Nations communities located near the pipeline have not been consulted about the plan even though they would be greatly affected and even though such consultation is mandatory under the Canadian Constitution. Many people are horrified that Line 9’s approval will lead to the expansion of Alberta’s tar sands, the biggest industrial project in the world, which poisons Indigenous communities living downstream from operations and accelerates global climate change.
Due to Harper’s decimation of environmental legislation, an environmental assessment is no longer required for pipeline projects. It is therefore up to provinces to take a stand for the residents they represent and order provincial environmental assessments to ensure people and ecosystems are not put at risk. The Quebec government just announced it will conduct hearings on Enbridge’s plan, but the Ontario Liberals have shamefully stated they will not be ordering an assessment.
Please join us in demanding that Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Environment Minister Jim Bradley, and Ontario Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli call for a provincial environmental assessment immediately. People living in Ontario have a right to know what the risks of Line 9 are and government officials should be ensuring that our health and safety are not being threatened.
