Israel: The entire story is not being told
Here’s my letter to the editor that was published in today’s Tacoma newspaper.
ISRAEL: The entire story is not being told
Recent opinions on this page illustrate how little is known about what is actually going on in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories – including Gaza, which remained occupied even after Israel removed its illegal settlers and the troops protecting them. Israel still controls Gaza’s borders, so under international law, Israel still occupies Gaza.
There’s ample reporting in corporate media about Palestinian rockets and what Israel calls “retaliation,” but there is little mention of longstanding Israeli violence and injustice against Palestinians. For such news, one must rely on other sources, including human rights websites like B’Tselem – The Israeli Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, and Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. Also, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights has weekly reports detailing the perpetual violence against Palestinians.
Curiously, no corporate media reported Congress coming together last spring – not on behalf of the American people and the U.S. economy – but to give Israel an extra $1 billion on top of the $30 billion in military aid already earmarked through 2018. Fortunately, American church leaders and others are requesting an investigation into all aid to Israel as violating U.S. law since Israel uses it to violate Palestinian human rights.
For insight into Israel now and historically, read Miko Peled’s book, “The General’s Son.” Peled comes from one of Israel’s most esteemed families and writes from personal and family experience, plus Israeli military archives. You can also watch his recent Seattle talk on YouTube. It contains critical Israeli insider information.
