Austrian Pledge: A historic opportunity not to be missed
2014 ended with a huge success for ICAN, with 158 states attending the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons and over 600 participants at our own Civil Society Forum.

Throughout last year, ICAN called on governments to have the courage to ban nuclear weapons. We were therefore happy to see the Vienna Conference conclude with the Austrian governmentissuing a pledge, which commits it to work to “fill the legal gap for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons”.

Austria has formally invited all UN states to join the pledge. This means that all foreign ministries will have received a letter from the Austrian government with instructions about how to join the pledge.

Here at ICAN, we believe that 2015 can be the year where a process to ban nuclear weapons starts, and we need your help to get your foreign minister to endorse the Austrian pledge and support the start of negotiations on a treaty banning nuclear weapons now.

As we are getting closer to the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ICAN believes that states have an opportunity to endorse the Austrian pledge as well as call for the immediate commencement of a diplomatic process to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Let’s make sure our governments take this opportunity.
