Be part of the loudest call globally to demilitarize – GDAMS Day, 13 April 2015!

In 2013, global military spending surged to an all-time high of US$1.75 trillion. Given the numerous crises facing the planet – the environment, the economy, epidemics, mass poverty – is this the right priority for the use of public money? We say no: a massive reallocation is needed. There are thousands of organizations and millions of individuals who support this point of view – what is needed is a serious mobilizing effort to make it visible.

The GDAMS movement would like to persuade governments all over the world to reallocate the global military spending to urgent human needs. Apart from organizing and participating in local events, we urge you to use social media as well.

The goal is to get as many people as possible to lend their voice to GDAMS campaign and tweet together to create a critical mass of posts on social media.

So,  from today until 13 April 2015, let us send out the loudest message to cut military spending and move the money to human needs. Use the hashtag #MoveTheMoney on Twitter and Facebook !

Military spending: theft from the world’s poor

by Joy Warner

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” — Former U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower, A Chance for Peace, 1953.

Global military spending is at an all-time high. Worldwide military spending is estimated to have been $1.53 trillion US in 2009, the latest year for which reliable figures are available. Global military spending is now higher than it was during the Cold War.  Read more
