FROM COAST TO COAST, VOW PROTESTED AGAINST MILITARY SPENDING

In solidarity with the Global Campaign against Military Spending (www.demilitarize.org), VOW members held rallies in Victoria, Toronto and Halifax to call for a reduction in military spending and a re-allocation to urgent social and environmental needs.

Last year, the government of Canada spent $28 billion on the Department of National Defence. Canada is now the 7th highest military spender among NATO members and 17th highest in the world.  However, the federal government spent only $1.5 billion for the Department of Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Over the past two decades, military spending has dramatically increased but funding for environmental protection and climate action has flat-lined. With catastrophic climate change, and greater poverty and inequality in this country and around the world, Canada cannot waste precious resources on war and weapons.
