Frontrunners/Niigaanibatowaad with author Laura Robinson. 7 pm at the Salt Spring Library

April 23 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Journalist Laura Robinson on Salt Spring

Laura Robinson is a gutsy journalist, author and champion in several sports (cycling, rowing, cross-country skiing). She loves to share her enthusiasm for sport through volunteer coaching and through her writing, but she hasn’t shied away from difficult topics such as sexual violence in Canada’s national sport and abuse allegations against people in positions of power. It’s difficult to summarize the list of awards and recognitions she has earned over the years; among those listed on her justtrylistening.org website are: the Investigative Researchers and Editors Award, the Debewin Award (“truth” in Ojibwe) for journalism and “Best Live Short” at the American Indian Film Festival (2008) for her film, Frontrunners/Niigaanibatowaad.

She’s coming out to BC to cover the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in April and will be on Salt Spring to offer two programs at our library on Sunday, April 23. The first, starting at 2:30 pm, co-sponsored by Island Pathways, features her award-winning youth-oriented book, Cyclist BikeList: The Book for Every Rider. Bikes are welcome too, as there will be time to check them over and do some minor adjusting to get them ready for the great spring and summer cycling season. A great opportunity to show your bike some love for Earth Day!

Starting at 7 pm will be a showing of the award-winning Frontrunners film, which weaves together a story of an epic 800 km torch run by 10 native youths, betrayal, apology and the realities of Indian residential schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission cited this film for its ability to portray a dark past, celebrate the tradition of running and move towards reconciliation. Since the film is less than an hour long, there will be ample time for discussion afterwards. This event is co-sponsored by the Salt Spring chapter of the Voice of Women for Peace.
