Connie Sorio, KAIROS – Conflict and Climate: Changing Course NOW!
Connie Sorio spoke on behalf of KAIROS at the VOW conference on Sunday November 9, Conflict and Climate: Changing Course NOW! KAIROS is a Canadian faith based organization that unites eleven churches and organizations in actions for justice. Sorio was invited to speak about Typhoon Haiyan (known in The Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda), which devastated the shores of the Philippines 1 year ago on November 8, 2014.
Typhoon Haiyan is the deadliest typhoon on record, killing at least 6,300 people. Sorio spoke of the progression of rebuilding efforts in the Philippines after the typhoon, specifically in the Eastern Visayas and Mindanao. After the typhoon destroyed millions of homes, only thousands have been rebuilt. Through this disaster, there has been mass protests against the corruption and repression within The Philippines, and the poor levels of assistance provided to survivors.
The devastation from this natural disaster is a reminder, of how climate change is negatively effecting exposed and vulnerable populations who do not have the infrastructure to withstand such emergent conditions.
Thank you for joining our conference Ms. Sorio.
