VOW Voices Our Concerns in Ottawa.

VOW Voices Our Concerns in Ottawa.

In September, VOW members visited many Members of Parliament to voice our opinions and to share information.  Here is a list of the key points discussed.   Our concern that Canada has refused to sign the United Nations’ new Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons and has not shown leadership for nuclear disarmament Canada boycotted the negotiations for the new UN nuclear weapons ban treaty and is not showing international leadership for nuclear disarmament. 122 countries negotiated the new treaty. Unfortunately, the federal government has signalled that it will not sign the new UN Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. 54 countries have already signed it. Canada’s current step-by-step approach is inadequate, and its Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty initiative has not had a program of work for over two decades. The humanitarian impacts of WMD demand abolition. VOW Signs CNANW’s Call on the Government of Canada to join the new treaty.

VOW Signs CNANW’s Call on the Government of Canada to join the new treaty.

VOW joined forces with CNANW in their  call on the Government  to engage in negotiations for a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons. The Government did not act on our request. Call to Canada to Sign Treaty on The Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons On July 7, 2017, 122 nations, in an historic action, voted at the U.N. to adopt a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The Treaty prohibits the development, testing, production, manufacturing and possession of nuclear weapons.  Nuclear weapons have been unconditionally stigmatized as standing outside international humanitarian law. Governments and civil society have together recognized the “catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences” of the use of any nuclear weapon. When 50 states have ratified it, the Treaty will enter into force and all the States Parties will...
